Silvergate Retirement recently hosted its popular “South Pacific Luau” event last week. The luau – an annual tradition for the last 12 years and favorite among residents, their families, and guests – consisted of a traditional “Island-Style” dinner and authentic Polynesian dance show.
The evening began with hors d’oeuvres, including coconut shrimp, egg rolls, and dumplings, and a special Pina Colada cocktail. For dinner, guests enjoyed a full buffet, which included tropical fruit salad, tangy macaroni salad, huli huli chicken, kalua pua’a, lomi lomi salmon, Polynesian roasted vegetables, and sweet yams served over pineapple. In keeping with the “island-style” theme, residents and guests also enjoyed haupia (coconut custard) and pineapple macadamia nut cake.
The show, performed by Kailani’s Wahines, transported the audience to some of the famous islands in the Pacific with traditional dances from from Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa and New Zealand.
Silvergate’s annual luau is one of the many fun themed events that residents look forward to every year. They often invite family members and friends to share in the unique social experience.
“It’s so great to see our residents really enjoy themselves at events like the luau,” explained Silvergate San Marcos Activity Director Lorraine Herschleb. “A lot of them really look forward to these events and many of them dress up in dresses and Hawaiian shirts they bought when they visited Hawaii years ago.”
