I rate Silvergate Fallbrook overall as GOOD, though not EXCELLENT. This rating reflects an average of three areas: Food Service, which I consider FAIR to POOR, and Activities and Maintenance, both of which are consistently EXCELLENT.
Food Service
Food Service faces the difficult task of trying to satisfy a wide range of tastes and dietary needs—something the senior cook often reminds us is impossible to achieve perfectly. Still, the department could perform better in several key areas.
Salad Bar & Soups — These remain the standout offerings, consistently at a 5‑star level.
Wait Staff — Service ranges from VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT when leadership is present, but on a typical day is generally only GOOD.
Order Accuracy — Meals delivered to the table often differ from what was ordered, with items missing or substituted without explanation.
Food Temperature — Soups and main courses are frequently served cool rather than warm or hot. A plate‑warming system could help resolve this recurring issue.
Follow‑Up Service — After meals are served, follow‑up attention is inconsistent and depends heavily on the individual server.
Menu Selection & Food Preparation — These areas merit the FAIR to POOR rating. The kitchen is occasionally out of published menu items, which is unacceptable. The regular menu has become unpopular enough that the alternate menu is now the preferred choice for many residents.
Menu Variety — There is an overreliance on fish dishes and various sliders.
Food Sourcing — Ingredient quality, especially meats, could be improved by prioritizing higher‑quality products rather than lower‑cost options.
Activities
The Activities Department is generally VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT, and at times OUTSTANDING. Two areas, however, would benefit from improvement:
Resident Input — Residents would appreciate more involvement in selecting outings.
Outing Planning — Several recent trips lacked adequate preparation. Missing reservations or insufficient planning resulted in some residents or staff being unable to enter the venue.
Accessibility Information — On one recent outing, the amount of walking—especially a long uphill stretch—proved difficult for several residents. Residents need clear information about physical requirements before signing up for a trip.
Maintenance
The Maintenance Department is performing at an EXCELLENT level despite challenging circumstances:
The facility is older, meaning something always needs repair.
The maintenance team is small and appears overburdened, yet continues to deliver high‑quality work.
Medical Staff
The Medical Staff consistently provides EXCELLENT care. Aides respond promptly to both routine and emergency calls, quickly assess the situation, and take immediate action when emergency services are required.
Executive Director
The Executive Director is OUTSTANDING, deserving the highest possible rating. From the residents’ perspective, she skillfully balances the needs of the community, staff, and facility with corporate expectations—an exceptionally difficult task that she manages with professionalism and effectiveness.
