What makes Rancho Santa Fe such an extraordinary place to call home? Certainly, its beautiful homes, natural landscapes and timeless character. But equally important are the places and institutions that bring people together.
Over generations, the Ranch has built an extraordinary foundation for community life: miles of horse and hiking trails, a renowned golf course and club, a beautiful hotel, a vibrant village filled with restaurants, shops and businesses, churches, schools, youth sports fields, and a senior center where older residents gather and socialize.
Together, these amenities create the connections and traditions that make Rancho Santa Fe more than simply a beautiful place to live. Yet despite all that the Ranch offers, one important piece of community infrastructure remains missing: a local senior living community.
Rancho Santa Fe offers a remarkable environment for raising families and enjoying an active lifestyle. Yet when longtime residents find maintaining a large home difficult or need additional daily support, there is no local residential senior living community to help them remain in the Ranch.
The Ranch has a senior center, but not a place where seniors can live independently with services, transition to assisted living, or receive specialized memory care as their needs change. For many, that means facing a difficult choice: remain in a home that may no longer meet their needs or leave the community they have spent decades helping build.
Silvergate Rancho Santa Fe is envisioned as a third choice: a senior living community designed to help older adults remain in the Ranch and connected to the people and places they love. That choice could also benefit the broader community.
Senior living is not an isolated destination. Done well, it becomes an extension of the community around it. Residents of Silvergate Rancho Santa Fe could continue attending church, enjoying local restaurants, supporting charities, participating in clubs and maintaining lifelong friendships. Their experience, generosity and involvement would remain part of the Ranch's civic and social fabric.
Something equally important can happen when longtime residents transition from larger homes into senior living. Those homes may become available to new families, who can raise children here, support local schools, join clubs, volunteer and begin creating decades of memories of their own.
One generation does not have to leave the Ranch for another to arrive. There is room for both. This is how communities renew themselves while preserving the people and traditions that make them special. Senior living does not compete with Rancho Santa Fe's existing amenities. It complements them, creating a community that can serve residents throughout their lives.
There is another important consideration: time. The property envisioned for Silvergate Rancho Santa Fe has remained largely unused for more than 30 years. Yet even if approvals move forward today, opening a new senior living community remains approximately four to five years away.
For someone in their late 70s or 80s considering the next chapter of life, those years matter. The property has waited decades for a meaningful purpose. The seniors who need this choice do not have decades to wait.
We have spent years listening, collaborating and refining Silvergate Rancho Santa Fe to better serve the community and respect its surroundings. Every development involves trade-offs, and thoughtful planning requires compromise. But thoughtful planning must also recognize when a genuine community need deserves to be met.
Our previous letters explored preserving the character of Rancho Santa Fe and helping longtime residents remain connected to the people and places they love. Silvergate brings those ideas together by proposing a missing piece of community infrastructure: a senior living community that could allow longtime residents to remain part of the Ranch while welcoming new generations into its future.
It is located in the right place. It is designed for the right purpose. And for the seniors who are waiting, it is coming at just the right time.
