Silvergate Honors WWII and Korean War Veteran Residents
Fallbrook community gathers to celebrate veteran residents and guests with a BBQ lunch and free Veterans’ Benefits seminar
Fallbrook, CA – Silvergate Retirement Residence, a locally owned, top-rated retirement and assisted living community in San Diego County, hosted a very special celebration honoring its resident veterans this past week. The popular event included WWII and Korean War photos and memorabilia on display, live music, BBQ lunch, and a presentation on Veteran’s Aid and Attendance Benefits by Bob Skaggs. The event took place on the afternoon of Wednesday, November 13, 2013, in Silvergate’s East Wing Great Room.
Attendees were encouraged to bring a photo of themselves or their spouses in uniform to display. These photos, along with various wartime memorabilia, lined the walls of the Great Room at Silvergate, and became the topic of conversation among guests seated at their tables. Countless stories were shared among attendees, many of whom recounted memories of their time in battle.
“I remember I spent my 20th birthday shooting down the Japanese kamikaze planes,” recalled Silvergate guest and WWII Veteran Tito Steere as he held a photo taken more than 70 years ago. “My time in the service was the most exciting time in my life and I enjoyed every moment of it. My ship and the men I fought with hold a very special place in my heart.”
Mr. Steere’s story was just one of dozens like it being shared around the Great Room during the event. In total, there were more than 70 guests, 40 of which were veterans.
“Silvergate always has really popular events,” explained Silvergate guest Barbara Gordon. “I’ve enjoyed all of the events here and they’re always so popular.”
The Silvergate staff dressed in WWII-era outfits served a classic BBQ lunch, featuring BBQ sandwiches, baked beans, fried chicken, coleslaw, potato salad, and fruit. For dessert, guests enjoyed freshly baked peach cobbler served with vanilla ice cream. One of the unique highlights of the lunch, however, was a special candy bar featuring various old-time candies that were popular during WWII.
Following the lunch, guests were invited to attend a free seminar on Veteran’s Aid and Attendance presented by Bob Skaggs of Skaggs Advisory Group. The presentation focused primarily on the Aid and Attendance Pension, which is available to wartime veterans and their spouses who require regular assistance. Bob explained the conditions that qualify veterans and their spouses to receive the pension, the process of applying for the benefits, and an overview of the monthly benefit amounts available.
