Silvergate Rancho Bernardo, North County’s premier resort-style retirement community, commemorated its 5th Anniversary with a spectacular celebration on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, bringing together residents, staff, and special guests for a memorable afternoon of vintage glamour, music, and heartfelt recognition of the community’s journey since its opening during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Themed after the roaring 1920s, the Gatsby-inspired gala featured live jazz and ragtime music by the acclaimed band Los Salvajes, a vintage cuisine experience with chef-crafted hors d’oeuvres, signature 1920s-style cocktails, and a dazzling performance by a troupe of professional Great Gatsby dancers. Amid the revelry, the community paused for a moment of reflection and gratitude as they honored the original “Legacy Residents” — the pioneering group of seniors who bravely made Silvergate their home when the doors first opened in July of 2020.
A Milestone Moment Born In An Unprecedented Time
“When we opened Silvergate Rancho Bernardo in the middle of a global pandemic, we knew we were building more than just a retirement community — we were creating a sanctuary of safety, connection, and joy,” said Matt Petree, Vice President of Development at AmeriCare Health & Retirement, the company behind the development and management of the Silvergate family of retirement communities. “To see the vibrant, thriving community it has become in just five short years is a testament to the strength of our residents, the dedication of our staff, and the vision we had for offering a better kind of retirement living.”
Silvergate Rancho Bernardo was designed from the ground up to offer luxurious, maintenance-free living with an emphasis on wellness, enrichment, and personalized care. The community includes beautifully appointed apartments, chef-prepared meals, chauffeured transportation, social and recreational activities, and a full spectrum of care options — all within an elegant, resort-style campus that quickly became a sought-after choice for retirement in the region, evidenced by the community’s nearly three year waiting list.
Honoring the Legacy Residents
The 5th Anniversary event was especially meaningful for the group of “Legacy Residents” who moved into the community during its grand opening — a time marked not by the typical fanfare, but by safety protocols, masks, and social distancing.
“It’s truly exciting to celebrate our 5th anniversary at Silvergate Rancho Bernardo,” said Sondra Brakeville, Executive Director at Silvergate Rancho Bernardo. “Back in July of 2020, we couldn’t hold a grand opening because of the pandemic. So we made today about our amazing residents — especially our Legacy group, who took a leap of faith with us and made Silvergate what it is today. They helped shape this into the vibrant, supportive community we’re celebrating.”
The full group of Legacy Residents was recognized during the celebration, with a special photo display commemorating their time at Silvergate and heartfelt tributes highlighting the friendships and memories they’ve made along the way.
“I never imagined how quickly this place would come to feel like home,” said Sharon Padzensky one of the honored Legacy Residents. “The people here have become like family, especially when we were all navigating the unknowns of the pandemic when the community opened. We leaned on each other and the staff, and that’s what community is all about. I have been so happy and comfortable here the last five years.”
Fellow Legacy Resident Gloria Thompson Palmer added, “Silvergate has given me such peace of mind over the years. The activities, the food, my friends and neighbors, the staff… it’s all been an amazing retirement experience… I can’t imagine being anywhere else.”
Five Years of Growth, Joy & Impact
Since its opening, Silvergate Rancho Bernardo has consistently operated at full occupancy, a reflection of the growing demand for upscale, locally owned senior living that offers both independent and assisted living options. Over the past five years, the community has added new amenities, expanded activities, added more than 90 resident-run programs, and brought on new team members to support the changing needs of residents — while continuing to uphold the personalized, resident-first culture that defines Silvergate.
“Looking back, we’ve accomplished so much together — from launching wellness programs and memory care services to organizing holiday galas, educational speaker series, and themed monthly events like this Gatsby celebration,” said Brakeville. “But our proudest achievements are measured in the smiles of our residents and the trust their families place in us every day.”
As the only family-owned and operated retirement community of its kind in the area, Silvergate Rancho Bernardo is uniquely positioned to offer an alternative to the large corporate chains that often lack the personal touch seniors are seeking.
“Our residents aren’t just names on a list — they’re friends, neighbors, and cherished members of our Silvergate family,” said Petree. “That’s why we’re committed to continuing to evolve and enrich this community, while keeping our focus on relationships, care, and quality of life.”
Experience the Silvergate Difference
After five years of building friendships, celebrating milestones, and creating a one-of-a-kind retirement experience, Silvergate Rancho Bernardo is inviting prospective residents and their families to come see firsthand what sets this award-winning community apart.
“We hear it all the time — once people visit, they fall in love,” said Brakeville. “There’s something special here you just can’t describe until you walk through the door, meet our residents, and feel the warmth of this place for yourself.”
