Independent Living Retirement Communities
Seniors who are considering moving to a retirement community may be reluctant to uproot their lives during the middle of a pandemic. However, for more than 100 new residents at Silvergate Rancho Bernardo that was not the case as they embarked on a journey to sell their homes, right-size their belongings and move in under the protection and security measures afforded by the area’s newest luxury senior living community.
There may be no better time than right now to transition to Silvergate, according to Karyn O’Laughlin, a new resident who moved in during the pandemic. “Silvergate’s been very particular with precautions which was important to us,” said O’Laughlin, who sold her home long before she anticipated she would in order to take advantage of the resort lifestyle, luxury amenities and concierge services offered at the community. “We felt it was safe here and we like the way that they follow up with you on everything.”
Undeterred by the pandemic and having determined the move would be safely conducted, she and partner, Larry Clark, made the decision to transition to the community and settle into their new home. For other seniors considering the next chapter in their lives but having trouble finding the resolve, O’Laughlin has a strong recommendation. “Come now…don’t wait. We decided sooner rather than later for us. Silvergate was the perfect fit for us, so why wait?”
“We are out and about, but we’re wearing our masks, and everyone is careful and taking precautions and following the safeguards that Silvergate has put into place, which have been inclusive of everything,” said Larry Clark, a new resident to the community who found the move to be a safe undertaking in light of all of Silvergate’s cautious and meticulous Covid-19 protocols.
O’Laughlin was not alone. As new residents learned of the extensive safety precautions and Covid-19 protocols instituted by the community to protect residents from the virus, seniors slated to move to Silvergate gained the certainty they needed to move now and move safely.

“You need to listen to what they have to say,” said Victoria Furgal, who moved into Silvergate in mid-September while taking the pandemic fully into consideration. “You have to be one to make the decision. My husband and I decided not to be a burden to our children. They need a life, too. It was the right decision for me and I’m comfortable…which is a good feeling.”
“I just feel very safe here,” said Clare Hagan who joined the ranks as a Silvergate resident back in July. “If anything goes wrong, there’s always somebody here to help you…whether it be nurses or whatever you need. I just feel safe.”
“When I first came to Silvergate, I saw all the protocols that you go through to even get through the door practically. It was great,” said Jeannine Carnahan, who moved to Silvergate in mid-September. “I thought it was safer to be here during Covid than it would be in my own home. Everyone here is really conscious about your security and your health. You’re being looked out for, and I just had nothing like that experience at home. I am pleased to be here. It was such a good move.”
