Residents at Silvergate Fallbrook came together for a special socially distanced Holiday Concert in the Courtyard last week to enjoy the musical stylings of Punch & Judy, a two-person singing group that has entertained seniors at the community for nearly ten years. The group played songs from multiple genres ranging from the 1950’s to the present and had many residents dancing in aisles.
“We love playing here at Silvergate,” said Judy Lynne, lead vocalist for the musical duo who has performed with partner Les Crawford for 27 years on cruise ships, at weddings and for parties of all types. “We get a kick out of seeing all the seniors smiling and having a good time. It just warms your heart to know you’re bringing joy into someone else’s day. It’s just magical.”
Silvergate’s latest event had residents enjoying an outdoor musical concert in safely spaced clusters – all while basking in the warmth of the afternoon sunshine in the community’s expansive courtyard space.
Each month, the activities roster at Silvergate features live musical entertainment where residents can sing along, dance to the beat and continue to take part in the activities like what they were accustomed to before the onset of the pandemic.
“I really enjoy the entertainment that they bring into the community here at Silvergate,” said Emmy Eleveld, a long-time resident at Silvergate Fallbrook who makes a point of participating in the community’s musical events. “I could be sequestered in my former home but I’d rather be here with my friends and enjoying the music.”
For years the community has offered musical entertainment as a regular part of their ongoing social activities program. When the pandemic hit earlier this year, programs were scaled back to prevent the coronavirus from entering the community and to protect residents. However, according to Activities Director, Carie Hensley, the community doubled down on its efforts to ensure a variety of fun and safe activities continue to be offered despite the ongoing pandemic.
“Even while residents are practicing social distancing, we want to be sure they’re still making the most of their day and really enjoying whatever activity they’ve chosen to participate in,” said Carie Hensley, who has been managing the retirement community’s lineup of entertainers, social events and physical fitness for many years. “As we learned how to deal with the virus, we found that we didn’t have to eliminate entertainment like other places have. We carefully made changes to our safety protocols in order to bring in quality entertainment safely. People at home are fatigued by the pandemic, but here at Silvergate our seniors are able to remain active, spend time with neighbors and friends and enjoy their day.”
Each month, Silvergate’s social calendar focuses on relaxing, individual indoor activities such as art classes and bible study sessions but also regularly features upbeat outdoor entertainment like today’s concert.
“The music they bring in here at Silvergate is always so good,” said Fiona Kennelly, a longtime resident at Silvergate who previously lived in Bonsall before making Silvergate Fallbrook her home. “I’m a very active person, and I really enjoyed listening to the band with my friends at the concert in the courtyard.”
Silvergate residents are experiencing greater positivity by living more actively than they were before moving into the community. When combined with time spent socializing with friends, the activities are part of a wide range of health and wellness benefits that residents at Silvergate enjoy within the senior living community.
