An inquisitive group of local seniors who were eager to learn more about retirement community living gathered at Silvergate Fallbrook on Tuesday, February 11th, 2025, to hear directly from residents about the realities of moving into a senior living setting. The candid Resident Panel discussion provided valuable information about what a move to a senior living community involves and why it can be a game-changer for families. The event offered attendees firsthand perspectives from residents who have already navigated the journey.
Moderated by Silvergate’s Marketing Director, Maurene Cullins, the discussion featured a four-person panel of residents and family members who openly shared their personal experiences involving moving, downsizing, and settling in to Silvergate.
“Your best financial and life-affirming decisions come when you decide ahead of any crisis,” said Sally Cook, who moved to Silvergate with her husband, Allen Cook, several years ago. “No decision is still a decision. Moving is easiest when you choose to do it yourself—when you can adjust, when you can still do things and be neighborly. We love our life here at Silvergate and encourage others to start the move process sooner rather than later.”
Questions & Answers From The Resident Panel
During the discussion, panelists addressed some of the most common concerns and curiosities seniors have when considering a move to a retirement community. From the emotional aspects of leaving a longtime home to the practical benefits of community living, they shared honest reflections from their personal journeys.
What makes senior living preferable to living at home as you age?
At home, retirees often are worrying about repairs, yard work, and security. Now, all those concerns are taken care of by Silvergate’s team, leaving residents free to focus on enjoying their days, participating in new activities, socializing at fun events, and making new friends.
How do you go about downsizing from a larger home to a retirement community?
Most often, seniors and their families will start the downsizing process in small ways, donating locally, giving items to family, and selling things that are no longer needed. From there, Silvergate can help enlist the services of a professional move management team who can assist with organizing, packing, and coordinating the entire move as well as setting up a resident’s new apartment home, making the transition seamless and stress-free.
What aspects of homeownership will no longer be a burden after moving?
After moving to Silvergate, residents will no longer have to worry about the burdens of homeownership, including: home maintenance and repairs, property taxes and insurance, housekeeping and laundry, utility bills and landscaping, meal planning, grocery shopping, cooking, security, and emergency repairs. Instead, residents enjoy a carefree lifestyle with more time to focus on the hobbies and pursuits they enjoy.
What kinds of meals are typically served, and what’s the dining like?
Dining at Silvergate is a highlight of the community’s lifestyle, with chef-prepared meals made from fresh, high-quality ingredients. Residents enjoy a social, restaurant-style experience with table-side service in an elegant setting. The menu offers seasonal specialties, classic comfort foods, lighter fare, and all-day dining for added convenience.
When is the right time to sell your house, and is that a good idea in today’s market?
Waiting too long to sell a home can be costly, as real estate markets continually fluctuate. Currently, San Diego areas like Fallbrook have strong demand and high home values. Selling now can help homeowners maximize equity and secure their future. Consulting with a real estate professional — one who specifically focuses on working with seniors — can be a smart strategy for retirees who want to list, show and sell their property while the market is favorable.
What kinds of unique activities and events are regularly held at the community?
Silvergate offers a vibrant calendar of activities and events that promote wellness, foster friendships, and create memories. Residents enjoy social gatherings, cultural programs, live music, book clubs, art classes, fitness activities, day trips, hobby groups, and more to keep every day exciting.
What are the advantages of choosing to move now vs. later?
The panelists acknowledged that moving is easiest when one makes the decision for oneself and there is time to adjust to new surroundings, meet neighbors, and find new friends at one’s own pace. They enjoy a worry-free lifestyle sooner, a smooth transition while still active and independent, stronger social connections for longer, and the ability to capitalize on a strong housing market.
How easy is it to make new connections and friendships?
Panelists agreed that making friends at Silvergate happens naturally, thanks to the welcoming atmosphere and many social opportunities. Residents make connections through events, activities, and shared meals. With Resident Ambassadors and welcome gatherings, many say they’ve made more friends here in months than they did in years at home.
Was there a true sense of ‘peace of mind’ after making the decision to move in?
“Knowing my mom is happy, safe, and well cared for gives us so much peace of mind,” said Alison Hayes, the daughter of a current Silvergate resident. “I visit often, and it’s reassuring to see how much she’s enjoying her time here.”
Executive Director Janae Orona said, “Our residents have faced many of the same questions and concerns that these prospective residents have. By sharing their experiences, they help to demystify the process and explain why making a move to Silvergate is not just about planning for the future—it’s about enhancing your present.”
