Our Unique Approach Our Memory Care Suites design was created as an alternative to the traditional apartment-style found in most facilities. Instead of long corridors and isolated apartments, which can lead to resident anxiety and less supervision, Silvergate Memory Care Suites takes a smaller, more home-like approach. Residents living with Alzheimer’s or related dementia live in one of our distinct “Neighborhoods”, which include private or shared accommodations that open directly into an open layout that includes a common living room, activity area, dining room and kitchen – a layout that closely resembles home.
A Neighborhood design.
The unique and secure layout of the Silvergate Memory Care Suites helps residents better understand their surroundings and encourages them to be more social, while decreasing stress and the opportunity to wander. The design also allows caregivers to always be within ear-shot or maintain visual contact with all residents at any given time, giving them the ability to assist any resident within a moment’s notice.
This one of a kind approach to memory care was conceptualized by Mr. David Petree, Owner of Silvergate Retirement Residences, after losing a very close family friend to Alzheimer’s disease in the late 1990s. At the time of his friend’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease, memory care was limited to either large skilled nursing facilities or small board and care facilities. With his close friend living in a large skilled nursing facility, Mr. Petree saw the limitations of the long halls and isolated units first-hand. After consulting with physicians, he decided that a combination of the both types of facilities would offer they best approach to caring for those with memory loss.
The Memory Care Suites combine the home-like atmosphere and small staff to resident ratio similar to a board and care facility, with the larger staff, specialized activities and increased socialization opportunities that come with larger retirement communities. Silvergate was the first memory care community to utilize an open layout, and after 15 successful years with residents and their families, we can assure you that our unique approach to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia care provides the best quality of life for your loved one, and peace of mind and support for you, during this difficult stage in their life.
